Pup comes visiting

Warwick Beacon ·

It’s not too cold for bathing, that’s sun bathing, at Conimicut Point. A gray seal estimated to be four months old showed up at the point Tuesday, prompting concerned people to call the Department of Environmental Management and Mystic Aquarium. But there was no reason for alarm, reports Sarah Callan, assistant coordinator for the Animal Rescue Program at the aquarium. The seal appeared healthy and was bright, alert, and responsive. Responders monitored the seal throughout the afternoon and the seal returned to the water around 7 p.m. Callan said it is normal for seals to spend many hours and even a few days hauled out on the beach. They do not need to eat on an everyday basis like other marine mammals. (Warwick Beacon photos)
