A smoky fire caused substantial damage to a Poppasquash Road cottage Thursday morning as firefighters from Bristol and Warren fought against bitter cold to bring it under control.

The fire was called in around 9:30 a.m. at 327 Poppasquash Road, a former caretaker’s cottage for the Point Pleasant Inn that is now owned by Karen Marsh and G. TE Marsh. Firefighters cut holes in the roof, vented windows with axes and put a heavy spray of water down across the roof and into the second story, near the western roofline, to contain it. Firefighters reported bringing the fire under control by 10:20 a.m.

As they worked, crews had to deal with bitter cold (about 10 degrees), and they had to tanker in water from the nearest hydrant, about a mile away. The majority of Poppasquash Point is not served by a public water supply. Crews also brought in a tanker truck to assist, and set up an engine as a warming station. Portsmouth and Providence fire crews provided mutual aid.
