Jose de Matos Couto, 77, of Bristol

Jose de Matos Couto, 77, of Wood Street, passed away on Jan. 6, 2018, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Maria G. (Cordeiro) Couto.

Born in Mosteiros, Sao Miguel, Acores, he was the son of the late Joao do Couto and Maria José (de Matos) Couto.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, John M. Couto and his wife Maria of Bristol, and Jose G. Couto and his wife Elizabeth of New Jersey; grandchildren, Shaun Couto, Derek Couto, Siobhan Couto, Kayla Cordeiro, Brittany Couto and Alexandria Couto; and great-grandchildren, Jaelyn Couto, Brayden Couto and Aubree Couto. He was the brother of Manuel do Couto, Maria Jose Medeiros and Carlos Couto, all of Bristol, and the late Joao Couto.

Mr. Couto was self-employed as a carpenter for nine years and then worked for Raymond Construction for 17 years before retiring. He was a fisherman, gardener and fan of Benfica. Anyone who knew him enjoyed his special sense of humor, which usually kept conversations lively.

His funeral services were held Jan. 10 from the George Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Luis Garcia Dutra at St. Elizabeth’s Church. Liturgical readings were by Mariazinha Sousa, who also read the Prayer of the Faithful. The offertory gifts were presented by Siobhan Couto, Brittany Couto, Alex Couto and Kayla Cordeiro.

Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Derek Couto, Paul Leitao, Antonio Sousa, Shaun Couto, Kenny Leitao and Louus Do Couto.
