East Providence Police arrest Pawtucket Avenue burglary suspect

55-year-old William W. Phipps faces multiple charges

EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence Police, with assistance from Providence officers, arrested a 55-year-old man in connection with a burglary in city Sunday afternoon, Aug. 27.

William W. Phipps, no address listed, was arrested on September 2 and charged with Breaking and Entering of a Dwelling of a Person Over 60 Years of Age When Resident is Home and Larceny over $1,500. Mr. Phipps was arraigned before a Sixth District Court Judge on September 5. His bail was set at $50,000 with surety and he was held as for a future court appearance as a bail violator.

According to a statement issued by EPPD Captain Bruce Kidman, at approximately 1:45 p.m. on August 27 members of the East Providence Police Patrol Division responded to a report of a break and enter of a residence while the occupant was home. The address was on Pawtucket Avenue in the Rumford section of the city.

The reporting party stated she was mowing her lawn when she observed a white male closing her back door and walking away. The reporting party found the door broken and entered the home to find money and jewelry missing. She further stated that her 95 year old mother was in the home and in bed when the suspect entered her room. He was last seen running north on Pawtucket Avenue.

East Providence Police detectives responded to the scene to investigate and collect evidence. With the assistance of the Glocester Police Department, they were able to develop a suspect and subsequently obtain an arrest warrant for Mr. Phipps.
