Crash on I-195 in Westport takes three lives

Three people were killed in a fiery crash on Route 195 in Westport Wednesday morning.

Massachusetts State Police said the 8:12 a.m. crash involved two vehicles and happened between exits 9 and 10 not far from the Dartmouth town line.

A preliminary State Police investigation has determined that one eastbound vehicle veered across the highway median and struck a westbound vehicle head-on.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that two occupants of the livery vehicle that crossed the median are deceased, and one occupant of the vehicle that was struck head-on is deceased," State Police said in a press release.

Police have not yet release the identities or home towns of the deceased.

Eastbound lanes remained closed as of 10:30 a.m. and traffic was backed up for miles.

Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes.

Ambulances from Westport and nearby towns were called to help. Little Compton Fire Chief Richard Petrin said on Twitter that Westport Fire was reporting fire — "fully involved auto" and that three additional rescues were needed.
