Big milestone reached at Warren's Tourister mill

Temporary certificate of occupancy allows for showing of apartments; meanwhile, Barrington Pilates moves in as first commercial tenant

Warren has issued a temporary certificate of occupancy for the American Tourister mill property in north Warren, clearing the way for developers to begin showing apartments and penthouses to prospective tenants.

Building Official Tony Carvalho issued the TCO last Friday, Dec. 29. It gives developers the right to enter the property and show units even while workers finish up minor projects within the complex. He said that once it expires in late March, developers can either extend it or apply for a final certificate of occupancy.

The TCO applies to building one (the north building), that building’s common areas, and the penthouse units.

“We put a 90-day limit on it,” Mr. Carvalho said. “If they need more than that then they have to extend it,” Mr. Carvalho said.

The other aspect of the project, the mill’s commercial space, is moving along as well. Barrington Pilates became the mill’s first commercial tenant when the business secured its CO and moved in to the ground floor of building one during the week of Christmas. Several others, including a dentist’s office, are coming soon. And Mike Giuttari, who is marketing the mill’s commercial spaces, said there are several other lease proposals currently being reviewed.

“It’s starting to get busy,” he said Thursday.
