Barnes students prepare veterans care packages

Johnston Sun Rise ·

The first grade classes at Sarah Dyer Barnes Elementary School in Johnston recently learned about Veterans Day up close.  The district has embarked on a Blended Learning Initiative, where each student receives a Chromebook to enhance their learning.  As part of this Initiative, the students were able to read stories and watch informational videos that taught them about Veterans Day.

The classes wrote letters and made cards and ornaments to send to soldiers overseas.  Items such as candy, snacks, playing cards and batteries were collected to donate for care packages. The children made and assembled the care packages in cute bags.

Active-duty soldiers from Rhode Island visited and spoke about their job and the history of Veterans Day.  The children presented them with the boxes of donated items and handmade cards of thanks.  This was another example of the good deeds the students at Barnes do every day as part of the Feinstein Good Deeds Program.
