About a day and a half into the investigation of a homicide at 433 Nausauket Road early Sunday morning, Major Raymond Gallucci conceded that the circumstances leading up to the shooting of 23-year-old Carl Cunningham of Warwick has left many questions unanswered. Other than saying jealousy was a factor, Gallucci said it would be premature to comment any further.

“The question of ‘why’ is what we are looking into and, beyond that, we are not saying anything more until we are through,” Gallucci said early yesterday morning, adding, or more accurately, assuring, “We do know that gang activity has not arisen as part of it.”

In a press release earlier yesterday, police said that, on Sunday, a few minutes after midnight, police and Fire Rescue responded to 433 Nausauket Rd. for a report of a shooting. They found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds who was transported to Kent Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving. The victim was since identified as Cunningham.

“The initial investigation disclosed that the suspect, Gonzalez, went to the Nausauket Road residence looking for the current boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend…An altercation ensued and the victim, who was at the residence and [was] not the current boyfriend, was fatally shot during the incident.”

Police got the name of the suspect and, with help from police in West Warwick, Providence and the Rhode Island State Police, they found him in Providence.

Tony Gonzalez, 25, of 48 June St. in Providence, was arraigned yesterday morning on murder and weapons charges. Gallucci said other charges might arise as the investigation unfolds.
